This post covers a topic that’s often overlooked but can have a major impact on tool performance and lifespan… your air hose and air compressor setup. If you’re running tools with dirty air or too much pressure, you’re setting yourself up for avoidable damage and downtime.

Air Hoses: The Hidden Contaminant Risk

During a busy workday, air hoses get dragged through mud, tossed in truck beds, and coated in debris. What most pros don’t realize is that whatever’s on your hose nozzle ends up in your tool.

Before Connecting Your Nailer:

  1. Inspect the nozzle for dirt, grit, or oil
  2. Give it a firm tap or clean with compressed air
  3. Never connect a dirty hose to your pneumatic tool

This one small habit can save your internal seals and reduce premature wear.

We’ve seen tools fail just from a bit of gravel or sawdust making its way inside through a dirty air fitting, it only takes a second to check.

PSI Matters: Set Your Compressor Right

Many pros think more pressure = more power. In reality, that mindset can destroy your tool’s bumpers and O-rings.

Ideal PSI for Most Pneumatic Nailers:

  • Recommended: 90 PSI
  • Never exceed: 120 PSI

Running your compressor too high leads to:

  • Overdriving fasteners
  • Blown bumpers and cracked housings
  • Excessive maintenance costs

Not sure if your tool is being overdriven? Stop by a Bissett Service Location for a pressure check or consult with a local sales rep.

Keep Your System Clean and Calibrated

Air quality and pressure are just as important as tool maintenance. Investing in clean hose practices and a properly set compressor will improve performance across all job types- framing, roofing, decking, and finishing.
