As a family owned Canadian company that began in 1929, we know that construction professionals need products and service they can count on. Our slogan “Driven By Professionals” is the driving force behind all the products and services we offer. As part of a new initiative, we wanted to highlight some professionals in our industry who are doing some pretty incredible things. Each month we will be featuring individuals in our industry to learn a little bit more about them and the type of work they specialize in.
This week we chatted with Angus Fisher, otherwise known as @fisherwoodcraft on Instagram. Born and raised in Coquitlam, BC, Fisher has been working in the industry since 2006. In this interview he talks about the challenges of being your own boss, and the importance of always working hard. He also chats about the rewards of building homes for people and being able to do something that benefits others.
1. Who are you?
Angus Fisher, a first generation Canadian but proudly Scottish. I was born and raised in Coquitlam B.C. but have lived through British Columbia. An amazing few years spent on the Sunshine Coast recently. I’ve been a carpenter since 2006 working in all the different styles, from forming foundations for schools to renovating 7-11 stores.
2. What’s your specialty?
I have had the opportunity to build a house from start to finish, however there’s no day more enjoyable than framing floors and walls. There is something very satisfying about being able to step back at the end of the day and see a structure growing!
3. How did you get into the trade?
I was working in a deli part time as a teenager and the hours were interfering with my goal of making the Canadian National Rugby Team. I mentioned this to my coach at the time and he called a friend, a New Zealand carpenter, who gave me a job picking up wood the following Monday. I fell in love with carpentry by the end of the week.
4. What’s your favourite part about work?
My favourite part of the job has to be the appreciation of the client when any style of job is completed. From handing a family the keys to a new home, to a simple cutting board, knowing you’ve done something that will benefit someone else is amazing.
5. What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the workplace?
6. What project/job(s) are you the most proud of?
The job I am most proud of is the first house I built on my own from demolition of the previous structure, to handing them the keys. I believe everyone dreams of having a home that is your own, and being able to create that for a new family was amazing.
7. What advice would you give to someone getting into the trade?
The best advice I would give to some looking to get into trades would be to work hard. I’ve had everyone from 17 year old kids who have never used a saw, to 65 year old veterans of the trade work for me. No matter what, if you work hard at whatever you do, you’ll always be valued.
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I took up the two worst things to do as a carpenter. Rugby and mountain biking. I’ve broken more bones and injured myself than most people will. However I absolutely love both of them and hope to be able to continue, if my body allows.
BONUS! Favourite Bissett Product?
My favourite Bissett product has to be the 15 gauge nailer, its never let me down and even in the worst west coast conditions .
