April 20, 2021

As a family owned Canadian company that began in 1929, we know that construction professionals need products and service they can count on.  Our slogan “Driven By Professionals” is the driving force behind all the products and services we offer. As part of a new initiative, we wanted to highlight some professionals in our industry who are doing some pretty incredible things. Each month we will be featuring two individuals in our industry to learn a little bit more about them and the type of work they specialize in.

This week we chatted with Kier Robertson, the owner of Robertson Mfg. Ltd in Kamloops, BC. The family owned business has been manufacturing wooden “western style” core boxes for core and soil samples since 1986. Over the years the business has built and maintained an outstanding reputation for dedicated customer service, superior quality products and technical expertise. Kier took over the family business from his parents a few years back and in this interview we chat about the challenges he’s faced as a business owner during the pandemic, and the importance of having good communication with your customers and your vendors.

Here is our interview with Kier:

1. Who are you?

Kier Robertson, owner of Robertson Mfg. Ltd. in Kamloops, BC.

2. What’s your specialty?

We specialize in building wooden products for the Mineral Exploration and Construction industries.

3. How did you get into the trade?

Grew up in the family business that has been around for over 35 years, and bought from my parents 3 years ago.

4. What’s your favourite part about work?

The challenge every project presents whether it’s a tight delivery date, a new location to find how to logistically make it affordable, or a new product that allows me to get creative and develop into a quality item.

5. What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the workplace?

We are going through it currently. Navigating through COVID-19 while during the busiest year in company history! From staffing to material shortages to never ending cost increases, it’s been a wild year that overall has been a great learning experience.

6. What project/job(s) are you the most proud of?

I am proud of all our projects we’ve completed but one that stands out was being the lone supplier to a very large site in Northern Russia. From dealing with international contracts in broken English, dealing with all the legalities in exporting wood into that country to meeting every single sailing date for 12 years.

7. What advice would you give to someone getting into the trade?

Communication is key. Staying in touch with your customers and vendors and keeping the relationships strong go a long way.

8. What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spending time with family is huge for me along with friends. To clear my head and refresh I love to ride my motorcycle. Traveling is a major part of our families lives and we can’t wait to be able to explore again in the near future!

BONUS! Favourite Bissett Product?

Easy, BF-BCS1109 1/2 x 1-1/2 S4 MED CROWN STAPLE 10M GAL. This staple has been the longest running fastener in company history. Tried, tested and true, it’s set us above many competitors by providing the strongest hold in our products.
