As a family owned Canadian company that began in 1929, we know that construction professionals need products and service they can count on.  Our slogan “Driven By Professionals” is the driving force behind all the products and services we offer. As part of a new initiative, we wanted to highlight some professionals in our industry who are doing some pretty incredible things. Each month we will be featuring individuals in our industry to learn a little bit more about them and the type of work they specialize in.

This week we chatted with Brock Muller, the Project Operations Manager for LouMorgan Construction in Kamloops, BC. In this interview Brock talks to us about the importance of good communication in the workplace and making sure that everyone is on the same page. As well he talks about how important it is to be open to new ideas, wherever they may come from.

Here is our interview with Brock:

1. Who are you?

My name is Brock Muller and I am the Projects Operations Manager for LouMorgan Construction in Kamloops, BC.

2. What’s your specialty?

I do a broad amount of tasks within the realm of Construction. But if I were to say that I “specialize” in one prominently, I would say it is Residential Stick Framing.

3. How did you get into the trade?

I got into this trade after making a career change years ago. I had the past influence of my dad being a Carpenter & Drywaller for a period of my life. I thought I should try carpentry so at least “worst case scenario” I build my own house. Then of course I enjoyed it and now I wear a tool belt instead of sit at a desk.

4. What’s your favourite part about work?

My favourite part of work is creating an object or a home from a piece of paper. Being outside all the time also has its benefits depending on the season.

5. What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the workplace?

Hmm, if I were to narrow it down to one, I would have to say communication is the biggest challenge. With projects there are so many moving parts from material deliveries, homeowners, Project Managers, employees. It is always tricky to be sure that everyone is on the same page at all times and that everything is in agreement. It takes a lot of discussions to make it as seamless as possible.

6. What project/job(s) are you the most proud of?

I’ve had the opportunity to do some cool projects but if I was to choose one. I think I would have too choose the Tiny Cabin I built for a client last year. It’s was a small project but it was built when the Pandemic hit. So I did 95% of the tasks on this project. From Concrete to Framing to Drywall and Paint. So it was just a good experience to do a project from start to finish.

7. What advice would you give to someone getting into the trade?

I think my advice to someone would be: You never need to know where information comes from. It could be from a carpenter that has been doing it for 40 years, 4 weeks or a complete outside source. Try and absorb everyone’s opinion and recommendations of how to do things. There is something new to learn everyday in this industry.

8. What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spare Time? Well that’s been slightly limited the past few years due to work, but moving forward I need to Camp, Fish and Snowboard more.

BONUS! Favourite Bissett Product?

I don’t have a preferred Bissett Product as they all have been great, but if I was to choose I would go with the classic 28 Degree 3″ Stick Nail.
