Keeping your air nailer clean isn’t just about looking good on the job! It’s essential for tool longevity, performance, and saving on costly repairs. At Bissett Fasteners, we see too many tools come through our service centers that could’ve had a much longer life with basic maintenance. This Tool Tip is all about cleaning the most critical area of your nailer: the nose.

Why Cleaning the Nose of Your Nailer Matters

The nose of your air nailer takes a beating. Whether it’s a coil nailer or a stick nailer, this area collects debris, dirt, oil discharge, and leftover nails. These tools often ride in the back of a truck or are tossed around the site, collecting all kinds of grime.

Left unchecked, this debris:

  1. Increases wear on internal components
  2. Causes misfires or jamming
  3. Raises your maintenance costs
  4. Shortens your tool’s lifespan

Pro tip from our Service Department: cleaning the nose regularly helps prevent debris from getting pushed back into the body of the tool, which can lead to serious internal damage.

How to Clean Your Air Nailer

Step 1: Focus on the Nose Area

Use a clean cloth to wipe down the exterior and clear out any visible grime or discharge. This is the first defense against buildup.

Step 2: Use Compressed Air

Spray compressed air into the nose and around moving parts. This helps flush out fine dust and particles that cloths can’t reach.

Step 3: For Stick Nailers – Clean the Magazine

If you’re using a stick nailer, pull back the magazine ribbon and wipe it clean. This area tends to accumulate grime that can affect feeding and alignment.

Preventative Maintenance Pays Off

By spending just a few minutes each week cleaning your nailer, you reduce the risk of breakdowns, lower your maintenance costs, and get more consistent performance on the job site. Whether you’re framing, roofing, or decking, your tools should be ready when you are.
