Proper lubrication is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your pneumatic tools. In this Tool Tip post, we break down exactly what kind of oil to use, how often to apply it, and what products to avoid to keep your nailer firing like new.

How to Lubricate Your Pneumatic Tool Properly
Step 1: Use the Right Oil
Use a Pneumatic Tool Oil
Look for dedicated pneumatic or air tool oil- not general-purpose lubricants. In winter, we recommend Bissett Winter Oil, a special 50/50 blend that performs reliably in sub-zero conditions. Explore Bissett Cold Weather Tools
Pro Tip: Below-freezing? Some tools require full-strength winter oil. Consult your local Bissett Sales Representative for guidance.
Step 2: Apply Only What’s Needed
- 4 drops in the morning
- 4 drops at lunch
That’s it. Over-oiling can cause build-up and gum up internal parts. Less is more.
Step 3: Never Use WD-40
Avoid WD-40 or Similar Sprays
While WD-40 might seem like a quick fix to clean the nose of your tool, it gets sucked inside and corrodes O-rings and other rubber components.
Over time, this leads to:
